ISAT U Laboratory School Family

Host School Profile 

            ISAT Laboratory School is a school under the Western Visayas College of Science and Technology is now Iloilo Science and Technology (also refered to ISAT or ISAT-U). The school is founded in 1940. ISAT Lab School is located in Burgos St. La Paz, Iloilo CIty, Philippines. The building is still integrated with ISAT Senior High School and ISAT University under one foundation. The total number of teachers are 34 and students are 395 (Per September 2018).

ISAT Laboratory School has four grade level of Secondary Education, which are grade 7 to 10. Each Grade has two classes consist of around 50 students.

Grade 7 is divided into 2 classes: Sampaguita and Ilang-ilang. Grade 8 is divided into Narra and Molave. Grade 9 is divided into Eagle and Falcon, while grade 10 divided into Gold and Diamond

ISAT Labschool classes differs into two buildings: N building and Engineering Building. The three floor of N building is for grade 9 and 10, while 7 and 8 is located in Engineering Building. The same grade classes are located side by side.

            The School Offered two different curriculum, they are Technical Secondary and Strengthened Technical and Vocational Education Program (STVEP). The first curriculum is the older curriculum which used to students grade 8 to 10, while the other curriculum is the newer one that implemented on 7th grade students in school.

            The school implement Full day School, which is the lecturing will be held in Monday to Friday. The class started at 7.30 am and ends at 5.00 pm, except Monday that will be started earliest at 7.00 am by the flag ceremony.

ISAT Lab-school has some laboratories which provide the students to practice the theory they study in class, such as Science Laboratories, Cooking Laboratories, and Computer Laboratories. There will activities or sompetition of students creativity or project. For example the School Exhibit during the university week, which display some students’ project that can be visited also by school member and also other visitors. They also has cooking contest during the nutrition month.

The school has some facilities that support students activity outside lecturing in class.

Academic Support System

            In ISAT Labschool building is located in one area of ISAT University La Paz Campus. The classes used for Lab School are N building and Engineering building. Total amount of the teachers are sufficient to teach students and have a good teaching system. The school has Science Laboratory, Cooking Laboratory, Computer Laboratory, Gymnasium (Indoor and Outdoor), and Library, even though it is still integrated with the university. There are some extra-curricular and student council that support their academic system.

Teaching System

            Teaching system in ISAT LabSchool is mainly using the lecture method, discussion, and valuing.  In teaching English, teacher has main role in delivering material to students, after that students will have discussion part with their friends, in order to have students-students, and student-content activity, last they will be responsible to mention value of the text they studied.  The teachers already use the K to 12 Curriculum. Each session is consist of 1-hour lesson (60 minutes), which is repeated daily from Monday to Friday. Each subject will have 2-3 meetings a week. The lesson starts at 7.30 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m. Students also have vacant time between their schedule almost everyday. Vacant time means a free hour for them not to have class.

Materials and Other Learning Sources

            Materials for lessons sources are more or less sufficient. There are laboratory (where they can pratice the theory they study),  library with many books, free internet access from 5 to 8 pm, sound system, projector, and white board.

Measurement and Evaluation System

            Assessment is a process that is used to keep track of learner's progress in relation to learning standards and in the development of 21st century skill, involves the use of empirical data on student learning to refine programs and improve student learning. The data is record in order to  to to provide bases for the profiling of student performance on the learning competencies and standard of the curriculum, and promote self-reflection and personal accountability among students about their learning.

            Teacher should employ classroom assessment methods that are consistent with curriculum standard, which are STVEP and Technical Secondary. It is important for teachers to always inform            learners about the objectives of the lesson, so that the latter will aim to meet or even exceed the standard. Moreover it is necessary to make sure that students are able to take value from the lesson learned and integrated in their real life. The teacher provides immediate feedback to students about their learning progress. Classroom assessment also measures the achievement of competencies by the learners.

The evaluation systems in ISAT Labschool are including students’ individual activeness, discussion, presentation, quiz, assignments/ homework, also mid-term and final exam.
