Purposes of Practicum
The
main objective of the teaching practicum is to provide student-teachers with
authentic hands-on experience in teaching. This is required to develop their
teaching skills and to start collecting experiences to enrich their
professional wisdom. It is not enough to read about teaching or to
observe others teach, something students have done for years. Student-teachers have to practice
themselves because practical knowledge and wisdom are held by the individual
and cannot easily be transmitted from person to person. Student-teachers need
know-how, and by connecting the skills of teaching to knowledge, through
reflection, they will gradually start developing practical wisdom.
Procedures of Practicum
First
procedure, teacher must to know what the topics to teach, and choose teaching
strategies.
Teacher
make lesson plan and prepare lessons and materials, and then teacher teaching
manage class, after teaching, evaluation with supervising instructor.
Outcomes of Practicum
The student-teacher
have more experience and trained in
teaching, also be able to create lesson plan correctly with offered curriculum,
and manage class in allotted time. Moreover, student-teacher knows the
appropriate teaching methods used in order to reach the goals or objectives of
learning.
The Challenges of Practicum
The challenges of doing teaching practicum abroad is how to manage the
material, class, and time appropriately. Because in a short time,
student-teacher need to adapt the curriculum, lecturing style and material
well. Student-teacher need to know some cross cultural understanding that might
she has in class during lecturing.
Overall Impression
The impression that student-teacher has are understand
the real role of teacher, choosing appropriate teaching method, also managing
class, time and material. Every class needs different treatment cause of their characteristic
to reach same goals or objectives.
The student-teacher
also learned many things from the students she taught. Students in ISAT
Labschool are smart, active and creative. They can understand the 3 to 4 pages
story only in 5 minutes, doing discussion activity and present the result in a
short time only, but always present awful result. The students are very honest
in filling their recitation log which is signed by teacher in every meeting.
They need an active and fun activity to guide them improve their skill more.
Moreover, they are good in respecting people who delivers something or talk in
front, eventhough they even can do better than them.
Suggestions for Future Improvement
By this teaching practicum program,
student-teacher hopes that it will be able to improve the teaching skill she
has. Managing class in delivering material and activities, and also managing time
to get the goals or objectives of teaching. Be able to implement appropriate
method which bring students to improve their knowledge, affective, and
pedagogy.
